As I said, this one was fast-paced right out of the gate. Its a little thin on plotting and transitions, but the adrenaline rush from the action and passion made up for it. I enjoyed cheering Cassie and Seth on whether it was their scorching encounters, attempts to protect each other, or teaming up to take down Peter's minions. I will definitely be moving on to book two for more of this exciting Protectors' world.

Nana Malone is indeed a good author and she shows that with Reluctant Protector book 1 of the Protectors series. Reluctant Protector contains the real concept of creating 'Human Super Soldiers', a concept that's been tried since at least the time of Hitler. I did enjoy reading Reluctant Protector and think that Nana Malone did a great job. The thrill was there along with the question...would it all that happened be for nothing. I am the type of person who once a book is started will never leave it unfinished even if it turns out not to my liking. Like I said over all Nana Malone is talented and wrote a good book. So why a low rating? I had to skip over an estimated 15% of the book, all of chapter 6 and 2 other parts. I understand sex in books to a point, but the sex scenes in Reluctant Protector are considered pornographic/erotica. I was shocked and appalled to see that in something that is considered Young Adult. Again I understand some authors put sex into books and I am okay with that, but at a certain point it becomes too much and nothing more then erotica. Because I felt Reluctant Protector book 1 of the Protectors by Nana Malone was well written I will give Forsaken Protector book 2 in the Protectors series a chance, I just hope I will not be disappointed.
This novella is a fun, quick read and very entertaining. The main characters have great chemistry. There's a little bit of everything in this book fast paced action, suspense, romance, and paranormal elements that make these two super-heroes. I've already purchased book 2 in this series and can't wait to read more about some of the other characters with these unusual powers. But I hope we get to see more of Cassie and Seth in the future as well.
I liked this story, even if it was a stretch of the imagination. As for the accusations of it being sex-based, it sort of makes sense. High-stress situations and isolation for years would make someone at least starved to be touched and held. If you buy into the sci-fi theme in the first place, you might as well believe it heightens sex drive, too. We are talking about people becoming supersoldiers and clairvoyants, after all. It's a fast-paced, sexy, romantic, gotta-hide-from-everyone tale. You'll either shrug and go with it or you'll hate it.
Cassie is a superhero due to testing that her brother did on her initially to help with her medical problems. She has multiple different abilities to fight others and push other people's minds to do something they had no intent to do. At times, she can hide in plain sight with nobody being able to see her. On the day that she tries to escape the lab once again, she winds up getting Seth involved in her escape. In the process, she also changes his whole life.
As another reviewer stated, this does remind me of the Christine Feehan books. While only a novella, I think this is a good start to her next series, leaving enough questions to try to find out what happened to the others like herself. It moved fairly quickly, and I found it hard to put down for very long. A lot of novellas either rush details, either in plot or character, but I did not find this problem in this one. I look forward to the rest of the series.
Ok, I got this free for my and I don't normally give negative reviews but I feel I have to weigh in this time. I think the story is fine for those who seem to love it, but I had too many problems with it, and I would definitely NOT recommend it for young readers.
I have to say, it started out really well. I got totally caught up in Cassie's character and in her escape at the very beginning. I was fascinated by the powers she possessed and also her inner strength and determination. I was also intrigued by Seth and the budding chemistry building between the two and was hoping they'd eventually get together (after many problems and interruptions, of course). But then the story started losing me and I eventually just stopped reading.
My issues were
1. Too Much Sex! Good grief, I know I'm old, but give me a break! Page after page after page of the two main characters having sex with each other - and that's just the "first" time. I swear I skipped over entire chapters because it got so old. I'm not against some erotic scenes in my stories, or even some explicit sex, but I don't need to have it described in every excruciating detail for pages on end. It's good that they fell for each other, but it got ridiculous.
2. Yes, it's supposed to be Sci-Fi, but having sex with a girl can turn you into the "Hulk?" I love a good Sci-Fi, but that was too far-fetched for me.
3. The typos and misused words got a little distracting for me. The author should proof-read more carefully.
4. Plot holes. I got lost several times trying to figure out what just happened, but it was never explained. Events seemed to jump around till I finally gave up.
I apologize if you were offended; that's just my honest opinion. All in all, I think the author has a lot of potential. It could have been a great story, but I was disappointed in this effort.
