I just finished reading Anne Penn's book Murder On His Mind Serial Killer! This book is different then Shelby's HaP or Crompton's Sudden Terror in the sense that in comes from a longtime resident of Sacramento and not from an ex detective of the case. Being a resident of Sacramento all of my life, I really enjoyed hearing what Sacramento was like in the 70's because I was a small child then. Her theory of EAR/ONS coming from South Sacramento is a new one, and I was skeptical about this before getting into the book. Her descriptions of the Morrison Creek and the canals that flow from South Sacramento into the canals of Rancho Cordova opened my mind to the idea - it is possible EAR /ONS lived in the South area of Sac .
She also has some very good reading into the psyche of EAR/ONS and other serial killers and rapists such as Ted Bundy!
The article's section was also a nice touch being able to research some of the original articles!
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone that has yet to read it!

Murder On His Mind Serial Killer Anne Penn 9781483593906 Books Reviews
The author, Anne Penn, takes us deep into the mind of the serial killer now known as the Original Night Stalker, and sometimes referred to as The Golden State Killer. Even though we may think we know the story if we've heard of Sacramento's East Area Rapist, we haven't heard the story of where this evil monster most likely grew up, and how he evolved into a savage, brutal murderer. We also haven't heard the truth of his victims and their families and the effects of their loss that ripples still throughout this day, even though his crimes began over 40 years ago. There is no statute of limitations on the effects of rape and murder to the people left behind to live their lives never knowing the true face or name of this monstrous man.
Anne Penn grew up in the Sacramento area. She describes her childhood and the idyllic world around her as she enjoyed the days of her youth, and before evil came to shatter the community and her world.
Even though I grew up over 2000 miles away from Anne Penn, I played many of the same games she and her friends did as a child of the baby boomer generation. To understand the events that began on the east side of Sacramento in the summer of 1976, you truly need to grasp what the city and the community were like back then. The author does an amazing job at showing us through her words what it was like to live during this time and to be there at "ground zero" when this evil man began his prolific crime spree.
Since my husband was an Airman and stationed at Mather AFB at this time, I can attest to the wide swath of fear that blanketed our community when we first heard of the East Area Rapist. EAR became his acronym.
Anne Penn's book doesn't give you the details of each crime that this evil man committed. Instead, she studied the inner working of the mind to try to understand just how and why a person can commit the atrocities that the EAR/ONS did, and do so without being captured.
Her book, "Murder on His Mind SERIAL KILLER," shows you the route this man's mind, as well as his physical body, took as he left a trail of tragedy and horror in his wake.
Anne Penn shows many examples of how this prolific cat-burglar, peeper, stalker, rapist, and murderer, decided how he would live his life by studying and idolizing serial killers.
But, the author doesn't stop there. Her story is multi-faceted. There are so many layers. She breathes life back into her victims so that the reader is able to connect with them and have a glimpse into their hopes and dreams for their futures. This is no small feat. It takes courage to take the reader into the lives of the victims before they met with the evil man who would take their lives from them. We don't really like to think that anything like that could happen just by random happenstance. It's unsettling. It's far easier to think that the victims themselves must have somehow been responsible. Yes, it's what we do to help ourselves sleep better at night.
Yet, this man is still out there. He has never been caught. His DNA is on file so there is hope that he will be identified. Somebody somewhere knows this man. My hope is that with all of the new publicity being generated, this man will be identified and if he's still alive, he'll stand trial for his crimes.
If you have any interest in the EARONS case at all, this book is a must read! It is very well written and gives you a totally fresh perspective concerning this monsters crimes as well as the ongoing struggle of the families left behind to mourn for their friends and families, that this man effected.
Hopefully, laws will also be changed that will allow the family's of victims to have access to the autopsies and crime scene reports, even if the case isn't yet solved. After forty years, the laws need to serve the living relatives instead of keeping the murderer free to live his life with impunity.
As you can tell, this book is truly multi-faceted. It is one of the best books you'll find on California's most prolific rapist, and serial killer, who is still out there and as yet unidentified. The EARONS--GSK, needs to be identified and arrested! Hopefully, this book will help bring this man to justice.
Perceiving the EAR through Anne's eyes and viewpoint kept me interested and engaged from the first pages on. Packed full of well researched material and written with a keen perception from growing up in the Sacramento area the book offers plenty to ponder.
Peasantly surprised by this quick ,yet factually concise read .
Initially I was worried this was another dodgy ,true crime e-book that was a cut/paste from Wikipedia and put out to "get the jump" on Michelle McNamara's posthumous book ,so to find it was a well written book with actual cited sources and photos makes it a great addition to the scant EAR/ONS/GSK arsenal.
The author combines their own life during EAR/ONS/GSK's activity ,not to insert themselves into the story ,as it were ,but to help paint a very vivid picture of the time and place .
If anything this book needs attention purely for the subject matter . How EAR/ONS/GSK was never captured or identified still defies belief.
The fact this prolific criminal is still not well known, in this Internet age , is also unbelievable.
Getting information out about him (without glorifying his crimes) will lead to his identification. Someone out there has the answer, they just don't know it .
This book is a great introduction for 'newbies' as well as a solid read for those already familiar with the case.
The author alludes to a personal connection to a victim(s) and with a sympathetic hand gives all the victims dignity by sticking to facts and not focusing on the lurid details.
10/10,this book was worth the time and money.
Excellent book, very detail oriented. I grew up in Rancho Cordova and South Sacramento during the time of his rampage and she nails the feeling we all had of fear. Her red book is the same but even more detailed. Love them both!!
I grew up in Sacramento near where Anne Penn did and at the same time so this book really had my interest from the beginning. As I read through it, I could picture the places she described in my mind. I started my law enforcement career (going on 35 years) during this time as well. While I did not work this (EAR) or any of the related cases, I always had an interest in them. Like the author, the LEOs working these cases do so with great passion. I'm not going to criticize any of my brother or sister officers for the way they handled things, but unfortunately there were mistakes made early on and I think Anne pointed them out appropriately and without bashing the LEOs. Her passion is evident throughout the book in the detail she goes into and by the amount and way she research it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who grew up in any of the areas where these crimes occurred, with interest in these cases or serial killers in general. The detail of the crimes, victims and their loved ones left behind makes this book an excellent read and keeps your interest throughout.
